Meet the sassy 11-year-olds who see the funny side of ‘beauty’
19 February 2019
The mounting pressures on young people to post flawless, filtered images of themselves online have generated headlines everywhere you look. So you could be forgiven for questioning the wisdom of dance teachers putting pressure on their tweenage performers to appear in full, ‘perfect’ make-up.
But in the highly competitive glitter-soaked world of freestyle dance, it’s all part of the judging criteria.
And these dancing tweens seem to love it.
Ashton, Sophie and Lucy discuss the hilarious side-effect of using fake tan on pale skin
The girls get ready for competition with help from their dance teacher.
Documentary series Mini Disco Divas follows the lives of the Scottish school children swept up in the highly competitive freestyle dance craze, spreading like a fever from Elgin to Edinburgh.
In the first episode, best friends Ashton, Lucy and Sophie – from Springburn in Glasgow – strut their stuff on the freestyle dancefloor at competitions across the country. Rather than appear stressed out by the pressure to look perfect, Sophie’s ineffective fake tan is a source of comedy for the girls.
