9 things you may have missed at Glastonbury 2022
The return of Glastonbury for 2022 has been nothing short of joyous. We've had great music from some of the world's biggest stars, plus a whole host of wonderful moments that sum up that Glasto magic.
From security guards dancing to surprise guests, here are some gems you may have missed from the weekend at Worthy Farm.
1. Even the security loved Diana Ross
Diana Ross’ Sunday afternoon legend’s slot on the Pyramid Stage pulled in huge crowd, and you can count the security in that number, as they were also getting their groove on to the disco icon and the stone cold classics she was serving up.
2. Wolf Alice almost didn't make it
North London's Mercury Prize winners Wolf Alice were booked to play Glasto's Pyramid Stage on Friday afternoon. However, on Thursday the band posted a desperate plea for help on Twitter after their flight from Los Angeles was cancelled - a predicament that no band wants to find themselves in ahead of such a huge show.
Despite the very real chance that they might miss the gig, luckily the group managed to make their way across the Atlantic in time for their show-stopping set. And we all collectively sighed a big sigh of relief!
3. Did the Queen go to Glasto?
We know that the Queen goes to the Royal Variety every year, but is she actually a big Glasto fan too?
This eagle-eyed viewer spotted a Liz-alike in the crowd at Worthy Farm while watching Robert Plant. But was it the actual Queen? Probably not, but stranger things have happened. After all, at a festival packed full of music royalty, we’d expect no less.
4. A true national treasure was present though!
Worthy Farm may not have hosted the Queen, but there was one national treasure in attendance this year. Yes, Mr. Jiggle Jiggle himself, the one and only Louis Theroux.
The king-of-docs-turned-TikTok-icon was spotted in the crowd wearing a bucket hat and wrap-around sunglasses. Could he fit into Glasto any better? Next year, we demand a secret set...
5. Macca warmed up for Glasto with a very intimate gig
How do you prepare for a headline set on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage? Weeks and weeks of rehearsals? Some stretches? Maybe a bit of ginger tea and vocal exercises?
Well, if you're Sir Paul McCartney, who this year was headlining on Saturday night, you opt for making a surprise performance in nearby Frome. The intimate, 800-capacity gig gave locals a taste of what was to come in his historic Saturday headlining set, and perhaps the smallest venue that Macca's played in a good while.
6. Sir Paul had some very special guests
When you’re a musical icon doing a Glasto headliner you already set the bar pretty high for who qualifies to come on for a few numbers during the set.
Paul invited a couple of other top-tier living legends to join him, in the form of Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen. It was the first performance since the passing of Grohl's Foo Fighters bandmate Taylor Hawkins, which made for a very poignant moment.
7. Olivia Rodrigo and Lily Allen: name a more iconic duo
In her Saturday afternoon set, pop-punk starlet Olivia Rodrigo was joined by special guest Lily Allen to deliver a very clear message. In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, the pair made their feelings known with a rendition of Lily’s 2009 single ‘F*** You’.
8. There were big-name guest speakers
Glastonbury's heritage of activism goes way back. This year, there were a number of special guest speakers at the festival, including Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
In a pre-taped message played before The Libertines' Glasto set, Zelensky asked festival-goers to help Ukrainians and keep up the pressure on politicians to support Ukraine.
Thunberg, meanwhile, had her own Pyramid Stage slot on Saturday, making a surprise speech to a huge crowd. During her speech, she said: "We are capable of the most incredible things... There is still time to choose a new path, to step back from the cliff."
"Instead of looking for hope, start creating that hope yourself," she added.
9. Blossoms spiced up their lives
You might not have put Stockport band Blossoms and the Spice Girls together, but that’s exactly what happened when Mel C joined the group for their Friday afternoon set on the Other Stage.
If you’ve ever wanted to hear a guitar rendition of ‘Spice Up Your Life’ then look no further…
