Alex Gibney's film Taxi To The Dark Side was co-produced and co-funded by the Â鶹Éç's acclaimed international documentary strand Storyville.
Ìý
It tells the story of Dilawar, a young Afghan
taxi driver, who was arrested by United States troops with his three
Afghan passengers in December 2002.
Ìý
Five days after his arrest Dilawar died in his prison cell.
Autopsy evidence concluded that he had died due to injuries
inflicted by US soldiers at the prison.
Ìý
The documentary goes over
the details of the last weeks of Dilawar's life and shows how
decisions taken in US Administration created circumstances making
Dilawar's brutal death possible.
Ìý
Taxi To The Dark Side was oringinally shown on Â鶹Éç Two and Â鶹Éç Parliament last year as
part of the Why Democracy? season.
Ìý
Jana Bennett, Director, Â鶹Éç Vision, says: "I am absolutely delighted that Storyville's Taxi To The Dark Side has won Best Documentary Feature.
Ìý
"The strand is at the forefront of documentary filmmaking across the globe, and just keeps going from strength to the strength.
Ìý
"Now it can add another Oscar to its list of achievements."
Ìý
Nick Fraser, Series Editor, Storyville, says: "Documentary film has never been more prominent and popular.
Ìý
"We are delighted that Alex's film gained the credit that it deserved at The Academy Awards, and I am incredibly proud to add this Oscar to Storyville's numerous awards to date."
