Â鶹Éç Two goes in search of Martin Luther King

When Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968 the world mourned a champion of American civil rights, signifying the way he would be remembered for the next four decades.

Now, 40 years after his death, a new one-off programme for Â鶹Éç Two sees Oona King go in search of a side to Martin Luther King that the world is in danger of forgetting – King the Baptist Minister, the prophet of God's judgement on America, the side of him which wanted to "save the soul of America".

Ìý

Former MP, broadcaster and political campaigner, Oona feels a close affinity to this project, as her uncle, Chevene, was Martin Luther King's lawyer – and her family history is intimately linked to the civil rights movement led by him.

Ìý

Making use of the extensive King archive of sermons and speeches, and through interviews with Andrew Young, Dorothy Cotton and other close friends and associates, the programme looks at Martin Luther King, not only as a humanitarian and activist, but also as a person whose motivation was ultimately deeply religious.

Ìý

King In Search Of King (working title) will be shown in spring 2008 and is a 1 x 60 Â鶹Éç in-house production commissioned by Adam Kemp. Jean-Claude Bragard is the executive producer.

Ìý

The programme is produced and directed by Iwan Russell-Jones, who has lived and taught in Atlanta, Georgia, King's birthplace and the city at the centre of this extraordinary story.
