Â鶹Éç launches music podcasts

The Â鶹Éç is to launch its first music podcasts on Monday 12 November, offering a broad range of regular compilations including pop, folk, hip hop, jazz, indie, rhythm and blues, dance, punk and Asian music.

Ìý

The podcasts contain material from programmes previously broadcast on Â鶹Éç Radio and – for the first time – also include 30-second clips of music.

Ìý

Â鶹Éç Radio 1's Chart Show is the first to launch on Monday, offering clips of the hits played on the show along with the run down of the Top 40.

Ìý

Later this week, a range of new podcasts will be available, containing highlights from Radio 1 specialist music shows.

Ìý

From Saturday 17 November, the portfolio expands to offer podcasts including Folk & Acoustic with Mike Harding from Â鶹Éç Radio 2, Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone from Â鶹Éç 6 Music and the Â鶹Éç Asian Network Chart.

Ìý

1Xtra Â鶹Éç has podcasts from a range of music genres including hip hop, dancehall and garage.

Ìý

All of the podcasts are available from bbc.co.uk/podcasts.

Mark Friend, Controller, Multiplatform & Interactive, Â鶹Éç Audio & Music, said: "Including clips of music in our podcasting service allows us to represent the incredible breadth of Â鶹Éç Radio's output.

Ìý

"We now have a service that offers highlights of both music and speech programming, giving listeners a much wider choice of great content to download."

Ìý

Lesley Douglas, Controller, Radio 2, 6 Music and Popular Music, said: "Music is at the heart of much of Â鶹Éç Radio.

Ìý

"It is an exciting development that we can now reflect just some of that rich diversity within our podcasts and give music lovers the chance to sample an even broader range of music.

Ìý

"The opportunity to reflect the combination of expert presenters with clips of the music they are showcasing should benefit both listeners and musicians alike."

Ìý

The Â鶹Éç's podcast service already offers more than 120 speech-only titles, including The Archers, Best Of Moyles and Russell Brand.

Ìý

The Â鶹Éç was the first British broadcaster to podcast when it offered Radio 4's In Our Time as a podcast in November 2004.

Ìý

It was part of a trial launched to help understand podcasting technology, audiences' appetite for downloads and their preferred content.

Ìý

A formal podcasting trial started in May 2005.

Ìý

A full service was launched following the Â鶹Éç Trust's approval of Â鶹Éç on-demand services in April 2007, after a Public Value Test.
