Coal House families arrive in 1927
Three families have today (Monday 15 October) been transported back to 1927 to take part in one of Â鶹Éç Wales' most ambitious projects to date – Coal House, which will be broadcast on Â鶹Éç One Wales and Â鶹Éç Two.

For the next three weeks, the Cartwright family from Penarth, the Griffith family from Cardigan and the Phillips family from Cowbridge will swap the luxuries of the 21st century for life in the south Wales coalfield of 1927.

In the three tiny miners' cottages at the Cadw heritage site of Stack Square, Blaenavon, the families have nothing more than a small stove for all their heating, drying and cooking and all water has to be fetched from a pump in the square.

Food will be scarce, with not much more than a shared vegetable patch, a few chickens and a pig to live off. Before entering the cottages the families were introduced to the two communal pigs (which they have already named Salt and Pepper) and to their ten shared chickens.

Professor Joe Cartwright, 48, from Penarth, said: "We've spent weeks thinking about the things we'll miss most about our lives in 2007, but now we're actually all here I realise what I'll probably miss most is having peace and quiet."

Stephanie Phillips, 40, from Cowbridge, said: "I can't quite believe it's actually happening. We haven't had a good look around our cottages yet but I've been shown how to use the stove and it's tiny. How I'm going to fit enough food in the oven for all eight of us I don't know."

Debra Griffiths, 39, from Cardigan, said: "We don't know what to expect but the families are all in it together. We all seem to get on well at the moment and that makes it feel like a real adventure."
