New broadcasting award launched in honour of Nick Clarke

Nick Clarke, the highly popular former presenter of Â鶹Éç Radio 4's The World At One who died in November last year, is to have a new award launched in his honour.

Ìý

The Nick Clarke Award will be awarded to the single best broadcast interview conducted each year.

Ìý

The award will be launched at this year's Cheltenham Literature Festival by Radio 4 Controller Mark Damazer at The Nick Clarke Debate on Saturday 6 October 2007.

Ìý

Also attending the debate will be Nick's wife Barbara and their two sons, Benedict and Joel.

Ìý

Potential winners of the Nick Clarke Award will be interviews which left a strong impression on the audience, that provided a deeper understanding of their subject matter or that were particularly memorable.

Ìý

Nominees for the award will not need to use a particular interviewing technique and the interview need not be a political interview.

Ìý

As Nick Clarke knew better than anyone, there are many ways to get to the heart of the matter.

Ìý

The first Nick Clarke Award will cover interviews conducted between 31 July 2007 and 31 July 2008 with the winner will announced at next year's Cheltenham Literature Festival in October 2008.

Ìý

The winner will receive a dozen bottles of good claret – which Nick himself would have enjoyed.

Ìý

Each programme wishing to enter can only nominate one interview. There is no stipulation regarding length – but the interview must be submitted exactly as it was broadcast. Internet-only interviews will not be allowed.

Ìý

A number of panels will listen to the submissions and a final shortlist will be drawn up. The judges will come from the Â鶹Éç and other broadcast organisations.

Ìý

Closing date for submissions will be 4 August 2008.
