Russell Watson talks exclusively on Just The Two Of Us and performs for the first time since his op

Russell Watson joined Vernon Kay on Â鶹Éç One's Just The Two Of Us tonight (Friday) to talk about why he could not return to the show to defend his title after his brain surgery last year.

Ìý

Following surgery to remove a tumour from his brain in October, Russell had hoped to be recovered enough to take part in this year's competition.

Ìý

But he was advised by doctors not to take part just before Christmas.

Ìý

Vernon asked if Russell minded explaining what had happened to him.

Ìý

He replied: "I had a tumour right in the central cavity of my skull. It was only two or three months ago, I had an operation and I'm fighting back."

Ìý

Vernon asked if it had been Russell's decision to withdraw from the show or whether it was under doctors' orders.

Ìý

Russell responded: "At the moment everything is really fresh and I'm finding it difficult to talk about. There was a time when I didn't think I was going to see my kids again.

Ìý

"I love performing and being out there entertaining.

Ìý

"The best piece of advice I can give [to this year's competitors], one of my favourite tips to give to any performer, is only think of nice things like your lover or your kids and just really focus."

Ìý

He then went on to perform Ray Charles' You Don't Know Me.
