New Head of Regional and Local Programmes for Â鶹Éç West
|
Lucio Mesquita, 40, is the Â鶹Éç's new Head of Regional & Local Programmes for
the West of England.
Ìý
He is transferring from the Â鶹Éç World Service in London, where he was
the Head of Americas and Europe, responsible for the Â鶹Éç's operations across
radio, online and video in ten languages, including radio for the United States.
Ìý
Lucio joined the Â鶹Éç in 1991 as a producer at the Brazilian Portuguese language
service after working for local and national media in Brazil.
Ìý
Four years
later, he moved to the World Service News & Current Affairs team as a
producer, followed by promotion to Editor for flagship programmes such as
Newshour.
Ìý
In 1998 he moved back to Brazil in order to become the first ever Â鶹Éç
bilingual reporter in São Paulo, returning to the UK in 1999 to work on
launching the World Service's 24-hour radio news service.
Ìý
After a brief stint back with the Brazilian Service as its director, Lucio
became Head of the Americas region.
Ìý
This included English language output for
North America through a partnership with Public Radio International and WGBH
Boston; English language output for the Caribbean; Spanish for Latin
America and Portuguese for Brazil - all with radio and online presence.
Ìý
Working with three major 24/7 online languages, in the Americas and Europe
region, Lucio has been involved with the development of video content as well
as partnerships with media and community players.
Ìý
Lucio says: "I am delighted to be working with the team at Â鶹Éç West which
already has a reputation for innovation across all platforms.
Ìý
"At a time when
we are seeing the end of easy distinctions between what's local or global in
our daily lives, I am looking forward to providing an even stronger and
relevant service to licence fee payers across the region."
Ìý
Acting Controller English Regions, David Holdsworth, says: "Lucio will bring
a wealth of experience from around the world to the West of England.
Ìý
"He has
some exciting ideas to make the most of new technology to keep everyone in
the region up to date with local life, whether it's on the television, the
web or the radio."
Ìý
