Jeremy Vine to front Â鶹Éç One's Panorama

Jeremy Vine is to join the Panorama team as the programme's main presenter when the show moves to its new slot, in January 2007, of 8.30pm on Mondays on Â鶹Éç One.

Ìý

As well as introducing every edition, Jeremy will also report on a number of Panorama films every year, conduct big interviews and narrate films which are not reporter-led.

Ìý

Following the announcement of Panorama's return to its traditional slot on Monday nights, switching to a presenter-led format represents another return to the programme's roots.

Ìý

The current affairs flagship has featured main presenters at various times in its distinguished past - including the late Richard Dimbleby, his son David Dimbleby, and the late Sir Robin Day, who presented Panorama at the end of the Fifties.

Ìý

Jeremy Vine said: "Panorama is one of the Â鶹Éç's most important brands and the programme is going like a train at the moment.

Ìý

"It has the best team of reporters and producers in British TV journalism and I can't wait to start working with them.

Ìý

"With the move to Mondays and exposure to a primetime audience again, Panorama is coming home. It's a huge privilege to be joining."

Ìý

Jeremy will continue to present the lunchtime show on Â鶹Éç Radio 2, where his blend of music and hard-hitting journalistic discussion has grown the audience left by his predecessor Jimmy Young.

Ìý

He has also been chosen by Â鶹Éç News to inherit the swingometer from Peter Snow for the coverage of the next General Election.

Ìý

Jeremy's broader career has seen him working as a full-time presenter of Newsnight; as launch presenter of Â鶹Éç One's Politics Show; and as Â鶹Éç lobby correspondent at Westminster.

Ìý

Jeremy also had a distinguished period as a Â鶹Éç News correspondent in South Africa, where his exclusive report on South African police brutality won the Silver Nymph at Monte Carlo.

Ìý

Last year he was named Speech Broadcaster of the Year at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Ìý

Peter Fincham, Controller of Â鶹Éç One, said: "I'm delighted that Jeremy is joining Panorama. He's a highly respected journalist who appeals to a broad range of audiences.

Ìý

"Panorama is Â鶹Éç One's flagship current affairs programme and Jeremy will play a key role in establishing it in its new slot as the channel's natural home for serious and trustworthy journalism."

Ìý

Sandy Smith, Editor of Panorama, welcomed Jeremy's appointment too.

Ìý

He said: "From January, Panorama will be right at the heart of the nation's conversation; sometimes leading it with fresh investigations, sometimes reflecting it by going deeper into stories already gripping people's imagination.

Ìý

"Who better to present the show than Jeremy Vine, who is already hosting that conversation to a huge audience on Radio 2?"

Ìý

Notes to Editors

Ìý

From January 2007, the multi-award winning Panorama will be shown at 8.30pm on Monday; the switch to Mondays will see Panorama's peak-time output increase from 15.5 hours to 28 hours, made up of 48 30-minute episodes and four one-hour specials.
