The Â鶹Éç News website is asking readers to vote for their favourite unsung landmarks.

Ìý

A recent survey found that around 66% of people would be lost without famous and eye-catching landmarks like the London Eye, Stonehenge, Blackpool Tower or Edinburgh Castle. (1)

Ìý

But there are scores of non-touristy and less well-known landmarks that make up the landscape of the United Kingdom and the Â鶹Éç News website is asking readers to vote for buildings and places they think really stand out.

Ìý

An appeal for suggestions has generated more than 1,100 nominations and plenty of pictures from readers so far for their favourite landmarks up and down the country.

Ìý

These were shortlisted to the current 28 nominated landmarks divided up into the North and Scotland; the West, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man; the South (of Birmingham); and the East.

Ìý

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a landmark as: "An object in the landscape, which, by its conspicuousness, serves as a guide in the direction of one's course (orig. and esp. as a guide to sailors in navigation); hence, any conspicuous object which characterises a neighbourhood or district."

Ìý

Go to the Â鶹Éç News website's Magazine page to vote: bbc.co.uk/news then click on Magazine, then Unsung Landmarks.

Ìý

The vote to pick eight finalists closes at the end of Wednesday 23 August 2006.

Ìý

Final voting ends on 29 August 2006.
