Davina McCall today unveils the list of songs that have made it into the BRITs 25 – Best Song Award.

Listeners to Davina's Â鶹Éç Radio 2 show are being asked to vote for their top five songs from the list of 25 to find the country's favourite BRITS song.

BRITs 25 - the Best Song Award goes out today on Radio 2 at 2.00pm.

The search to find the public's favourite British song released since the BRITs began in 1977 was launched by Radio 2 and the BPI to mark the 25th ceremony in the history of the BRIT Awards.

The shortlist of 25 songs has been nominated by a special panel made up of members of the music industry and media.

Ìý

All the singles have been performed by a British act since 1977.

The top five will then be announced at the BRIT Awards Nomination Launch on 10 January 2005 at the Park Lane Hotel, London.

To decide upon the BRITs 25 - Best Song, listeners to Radio 2's Ken Bruce show will be able to hear the top five between Monday 17 and Friday 21 January (9.30am-noon).

Ìý

The voting will be open via web, text and telephone from 21 to 30 January.

Ìý

"Distilling over a quarter-century of hits to a list of 25 to be voted on by Radio 2 listeners has been one of the most difficult tasks I have ever shared in.

Ìý

"Now it's up to our listeners to find the all time favourite British song, I wish them luck!"

BPI Chairman Peter Jamieson says: "BRITs 25 with Mastercard is already lining up to be a very special show.

Ìý

"This unique collaboration with Â鶹Éç Radio 2 gives the British public their opportunity to select the very best song of the two-and-a-half decades the BRITs has been running. The result is bound to be controversial."
