One of the
nation's most respected sports broadcasters, Barry Davies, will commentate
on his final football game for Match of the Day this Saturday (25 September
2004).
Ìý
After 35 years of working with Match of the Day - which
began on 9 August 1969 with his commentary of Crystal Palace v Manchester
United - Barry will commentate on this Saturday's clash between Manchester
City and Arsenal.
Ìý
Barry is the longest serving member of the Match of
the Day team.
Ìý
Barry Davies said: "It is not easy to give up something
that has been a major part of my working life but I think I have had
a good innings.
Ìý
"I am not giving up broadcasting and hope to continue
working with the Â鶹Éç on other major sporting events."
Ìý
Niall Sloane, Â鶹Éç Head of Football, said: "Barry
Davies has been at the heart of Match of the Day virtually from its
start, and is one of the great football commentators.

"His ability to sum up memorable moments succinctly
has been one of the prime distinctions of the programme down the years."

Barry will continue to work for Â鶹Éç Sport on a freelance
basis, commentating on a range of sports.
