Moby - why I took drugs aged 10

The chart-topping musician Moby reveals in this week's Radio Times that he dabbled in drugs at primary school to impress his schoolfriends.

The 36-year-old also admits to being intimidated by other celebrities and has only ever taken one holiday because he gets bored so easily.

Moby began experimenting with illegal substances aged 10. "It was hash and pills a friend was given by his sister, who was meant to be taking them in a mental hospital. It was my way of hanging out with the cool kids.

"We drank whatever liquor we could steal from our parents - mostly cr猫me de menthe - and threw up on each other. It was miserable, but no one would admit it. I pretty much stopped at 13 because I was scared. A few years later I became so straight I didn't drink or eat red meat and was celibate."

Interviewed in his minimalist loft in Lower Manhattan, Moby is constantly self-deprecating about his looks and his work. "It comes naturally. Parts of my low self-esteem are genetic. On my father's side, the Melvilles, there's a predisposition to angst, depression and melodrama. I want to control it in myself, but I can't say no to who I am, even though I wish I could.

"I even read magazine articles like 'Ten steps to a happier life'. I'm envious of those who find happiness in regular things, like holidays. I've only ever taken one - to Barbados in 1996. After three days I was so miserable I took the first flight home. I'm bored easily.

"This is something I've never shared with anyone - all my life I've been intimidated by public figures. When I read about them in magazines, I sense their life is better than mine, and one of my goals, now I'm a public figure, is never to make anyone feel bad about themselves when they read about me.

"Music is my way of taking my private demons, dressing them up and making beauty from them. A lot of artists feel their neuroses suck, but need them for creativity."

This interview is taken from the 6 - 12 July issue of Radio Times, on sale on Tuesday 2.
