Doctor
Who - The Ark in Space DVD
The fourth and most popular Doctor, Tom Baker, is launched into space
and thousands of years into the future for a claustrophic adventure
onboard a mysterious space station in this digitally-remastered DVD
release of The Ark in Space.
The
TARDIS arrives on the apparently abandoned space station, Nerva,
otherwise known as the Ark, which is orbiting the Earth. On board,
the Doctor and his two assistants, Sarah and Harry, make a gruesome
discovery about the ship's cargo. Far from being abandoned, the
ship carries the last survivors of the human race who are being
held in suspended animation following the near destruction of all
life on the planet.
They
soon discover that the human bodies have not been left entirely
alone during their long sleep. An insect-like alien has invaded
the Ark, penetrating the flesh and threatening the lives of all
the humans on board. The Doctor decides that the only option is
to reactivate the station's systems, which in turn causes the humans
to awake from suspended animation.
This tautly-paced adventure had children scurrying behind the sofa
and Mary Whitehouse reaching for the phone when it was first broadcast
in 1974, ahead of the hugely-successful film Alien, which later
pursued a similar theme.
Additional
features on the DVD include a commentary by Tom Baker, actress Elisabeth
Sladen (Sarah) and one of Doctor Who's most successful producers,
Philip Hinchcliffe; a specially-recorded interview with the designer
of The Ark in Space, Roger Murray-Leach; a news interview with Tom
Baker while filming Doctor Who in Wookey Hole; a 3-D technical schematic
of the Ark plus new and newly-remodelled special effects. Also included
are an early unused version of the new Tom Baker title sequence,
a brand-new model sequence from 麻豆社i's TARDIS-cam feature, and a
photo gallery showing rare and previously unpublished photographs
from the original recording.
