Introducing... The Rosellys

The first time that Rebecca sang on stage, Simon was in the audience. A cheap chat-up line later and The Rosellys were born.

Who are your influences...

Rebecca’s main influence for many years has been Eva Cassidy. More recently she has been listening to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Nanci Griffiths and Shawn Colvin.

Simon’s roots are from Louisiana, as he has been a fiddler in a Cajun and Zydeco band for over 18 years. He was brought up listening to artists such as Ry Cooder, Delbert McClinton, and more recently Ryan Adams, Johnny Cash and Gram Parsons.

We sound a bit like...

Throw in a little Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffiths, Shawn Colvin. Ry Cooder, Delbert McClinton, Ryan Adams, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, bring to the boil for 20 mins and serve with corn bread.

Who would be a dream band member and why?

Simon: Ry Cooder – some serious slide!
Rebecca: Anyone from ‘Union Station’!

Does the city offer you enough opportunities?

The open mic scene is huge in Notts and gave us a great practice stage when learning the Guitar, often leading to other interesting gigs.

What was your best gig and why?

Spirits, Louisiana. USA. Our favourite gig so far, great food, great audience, great friends, very inspiring.

What would you give up to get signed?

Simon: Rebecca!
Rebecca: Simon!

How did the band get together?

The very first time that Rebecca sang on stage, Simon was in the audience and a cheap chat up line later… The Rosellys were born.

Who are the most influential figures in your life?

Simon: Simon’s Geetar-pickin, Steel slidin, Accordian Squeezin Dad!
Rebecca: Eva Cassidy and Rebecca’s very musical Parents!

Best band in Notts and why?

‘The Old Nick Trading Company’. Great vocals!

What are you listening to at the moment?

Simon: Buena Vista Social Club
Rebecca: Gillian Welch ‘Revival’

In a fire, which album would you rescue?

Simon: Ry Cooder ‘Bop Till You Drop’
Rebecca: Eva Cassidy ‘Live at Blues Alley’

What's the perfect night-out in Nottingham?

A beer in the Malt Cross, dinner at Bistro Pierre, live music from Cosmic Americana night at the Maze, then stagger into a black cab to get home!

Give us a short description of your best tracks...

‘Only Way She Knows’: The perfect mix of Guitars in a rock 'n' roll rhythm with catchy syncopated lyrics and a growling electric guitar lead…..

‘Rescue Me’: A beautiful blend of simple melodic guitar picking, underneath a powerful vocal line.

‘Caught Me At A Bad Time’: Heavily influenced by mountain bluegrass, this double vocal up beat number captures our American travels in under three minutes!
