Introducing... The Arcane

The Arcane are from Beeston. Guitarist Adi tells us more about the band.

Where are you based?

Beeston is home. We all grew up and went to school there. My house has been tagged 'The Arcane HQ'

How did the band get together?

I hadn't seen Liam (our drummer) for about eight years, then one afternoon I spied him on the bus on the way home from work and we talked about music.

Eventually we got on to the subject of me wanting to start a new band and I asked him to play drums. He agreed but he was off to Leeds uni, so we had to wait a year until his return.

Why 'The Arcane'?

Well, it all began about four years ago...

I was sitting eating an egg 'n' bacon cob reading a book at work, and it mentioned 'the arcane' in a sentence. Just thought it sounded hot for my new band and I was right!

That's the story behind the name.

We sound a bit like...

This question gets asked all of the time - we still don't know.

A promoter asked this question recently and I didn't know what to say, so I gave them a ticket to one of our gigs. We were booked shortly after that.

Who are your influences?

Oasis, Radiohead, the Stone Roses, The Libertines, Nirvana, The Doors, the Beatles...

Who would be a dream band member, and why?

Chris Gorang from Nottingham band Censored. He's a legend on the drums, great haircut and wears a nice jacket. If you're ever out in Spain, he's the lad you want to be with. He seems to know everything about it, though he's never been!

Who are the most influential figures in your life?

People with good haircuts. Liam Gallagher, Ian Brown.

What would you give up to get signed?

I'd give up playing bum notes when we play live. EastEnders can go too. Corro - now that's staying!

What was your best gig, and why?

The Social - 2007.

People were dancing like chickens, drinks were getting smashed, and it just ended up being a really good drunk gig.

Does Nottingham offer you enough opportunities?

The venues are here, students are here, the bands are here, promoters don't seem to give you the time of day which makes it harder to get your music heard.

Best band in Nottingham, and why?

Censored.

Young lads with more talent than me, me Mam, and me Dad put together!

What are you listening to at the moment?

The Music - Welcome to the North.

In a fire, which album would you rescue?

Oasis - Be Here Now. This came out the day I got my exam results in '97. Beautiful year, it was... Bring back the 90's.
