Sherwood Forest is one of the most famous woodlands in the world. It is home to the Major Oak and was Robin Hood's legendary hideout. But, there is much more to this area than one tree. Sherwood Forest Country Park is a rich patchwork of woodland, heathland and grassland habitats. This woodland contains some of the oldest trees in Europe, veteran oaks five centuries old, and needs careful management. These trees are showing their age and will soon need help if they are going to survive. Ted Green, of the Ancient Tree Forum, has been coming to Sherwood Forest for 40 years and is passionate about the Forest. "There are so many examples of these really, really old trees. The forest is so full of insects and fungi... the word is biodiversity.听 "This is Europe's rainforest." The 450 acre country park is part of the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve. It is managed by Nottinghamshire County Council and maintained by its country park rangers.
