Getting green on Nottinghams waterways

Stuart's trying to show young people in Nottinghamshire that environmentally friendly days out are fun as well as good for the world.

Stuart Zlotowitz works on a narrow boat project run by Nottingham City Council. It's been going since 1975 and they take young people of all ages (0 – 25) on trips on the canals and rivers of Nottinghamshire.

He has been working on the narrow boats for about 6 years and he really enjoys it. "We get a variety of different groups, it's an opportunity to take young people out of the city and into the countryside, I get a lot out of it", he says.

The main questions the kids ask are: "how fast do the boats go?" and "can we go any faster?" Stuart says when the trip is over they're more aware.

"We do find by the end of a day they've really got into the pace of life and realise not every activity has to be rushing about and high adrenalin."

Another aim of Stuart's is to make the narrow boat a greener project. "We do recycling on the boat, conservation work with groups of young people and we use chemical free cleaning products as after washing the water goes straight into the canal or river and can be polluting".

He adds: "We've also started providing bird seed on board as lots of people like to feed the birds with sliced white bread which is really polluting and not actually nutritionally valuable for birds".

The narrow boat project is running trips as part of Green Weeks.
