Susie celebrates 10 years at Look East helm

Look East presenter Susie Fowler-Watt is celebrating 10 years in the presenter's chair. Susie has fronted the regional news programme since July 1997 - but says she still feels like the new girl compared to her co-host Stewart White.

One of the best-known faces on regional television is celebrating a milestone this month.

Â鶹Éç Look East's Susie Fowler-Watt has notched up 10 years as one of the programme's main presenters.

But she revealed during an interview on stage at the Â鶹Éç stand at the Royal Norfolk Show that she still feels like the new girl compared to her partner on screen, Stewart White.

'Friendly place'

The Look East stalwart has been with the programme for 23 years - and Susie said that their easy-going relationship is one of the reasons why she feels so at home in the studio.

"It is a very friendly place and we all get on very well and I don't think you can actually fake that," she said.

"I think if you don't like someone who you are presenting with that will come over and we're very lucky because the main team - Stewart, Julie and me who are on five nights a week normally - we all get on very, very well."

The Cambridge University graduate joined the presenting team after working at Westminster as the programme's political correspondent in the run-up to the 1997 General Election.

Perfect timing

The opportunity to read the news to viewers across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Essex and parts of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire came at the perfect time.

"I was very lucky because I decided after the election I wanted to leave political reporting and go back into mainstream news, and the day after the election I got offered the Look East job," she said.

The job's variety from day to day and its journalistic challenges are what have held Susie's interest - with some of the stories having a deep impact on the team.

"The Soham story… was terribly, terribly difficult," she said.

"Stewart was actually out in Soham or in the environment around Soham every day for the whole period of that.

"He's a father of three and I know that he found it extremely hard and would wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it."

With Susie a visitor to hundreds of thousands of viewers' homes each weekday evening, many shared in her delight when her daughter Lola was born in 2005.

The 37-year-old - who is married to Look East reporter Alex Dunlop - said motherhood has fulfilled her main goal in life.

"We really, really enjoy being parents," she said. "Becoming a mother has been the most important thing that has actually happened to me in my life."

While life with a two-year-old is undoubtedly busy and the schedule at work hectic, Susie says her passion for her job hasn't waned yet.

"I love doing Look East," she said. "I feel incredibly privileged to have a job that I enjoy so much and is so much fun."
