Big Picture: Angel of the North's 15th birthday

Angel of the north

The north-east England landmark, the Angel of the North, is set to celebrate its 15th birthday this week. At its unveiling in 1998, Anthony Gormley's sculpture was both described as "inspiring" and the "Angel of Death" because it allegedly distracted passing motorists, causing them to crash. Critics said it would make Gateshead a laughing stock, but the sculpture has become a major visitor attraction.
