A man who raped a child after abducting her has been jailed for 23 years.

Peter Wrigglesworth, of Chatsworth Terrace in York, was convicted of rape, child abduction and sexual offences against a child at Teesside Crown Court.

The 67-year-old was sentenced to 17 years and five months imprisonment and extended licence period of six years on Friday.

Det Insp Louise Sproson of Hartlepool CID said Wrigglesworth was a "danger to children".

The pensioner was arrested on 6 November last year after he met a child on Teesside.

He then took took the victim to his home where he raped and sexually assaulted her, Cleveland Police said.

Det Insp Sproson said: 鈥淭he victim has been traumatised by these events, yet her bravery in helping police with the investigation has ensured that he cannot be a danger to anyone else."
