Capability statements

Our capability statements summarise our experience and our impact on some of the world's most pressing development issues. Each statement outlines our approach and showcases the results and insights gained from our diverse range of media and communication projects.

Health

Learn more
  • Prevention, preparedness and response to infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies

We have developed a broad range of social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) initiatives to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. We train media practitioners, frontline health workers, humanitarian actors and government agencies in preparedness to provide a comprehensive communication response to a range of infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.
  • Find out how we have rapidly adapted and responded to the pandemic by producing trusted, accurate and timely health communication and content to mitigate and counter rumour and harmful mis- and disinformation.
  • We view health as a state of physical, mental and social well-being. Our work focuses on support for people and communities who are most vulnerable because of poverty, gender, disability or living in conflict-affected areas.
  • Learn more about how our work encourages healthier behaviours and more supportive social norms. Our work helps encourage improvements in child nutrition and more frequent and effective use of health services.
  • Our communication initiatives focus on practices that help reduce risks and improve the health of pregnant women, new mothers, babies and infants.
  • From providing basic sexual education, to opening discussion on taboo topics such as sex, modern contraceptive methods, relationships and consent, we break barriers to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • We improve knowledge about water, sanitation and hygiene, and our work addresses deeply entrenched attitudes and norms around hygiene and sanitation behaviours.

Governance

Learn more
  • Our programming empowers people to understand their rights, creates space for inclusive public discussion and influences power by enabling people to interact directly with decisions-makers and holding them to account. It supports free and fair elections, tackles mis- and disinformation and helps people live together more peacefully.
  • Explore how our work, and our work with media partners, provides trusted, accurate and balanced information to help people understand their rights and the responsibilities of those in power.
  • Through high quality media and communication, we ensure that citizens are well-informed and understand their rights and responsibilities in political processes including elections. Our work enables inclusive public debate that eases tensions, and bridges social and political divides.
  • We have a long-established presence in countries experiencing protracted conflict, fragmented social structures and post-conflict situations. We use mass media, including digital, and outreach to support conflict prevention, conflict resolution and peacebuilding across a range of settings, recognising that the pathway between peaceful, inclusive and cohesive societies, increased fragility and conflict is a complex and fluid one.
