The Dog Channel visiting Rochdale Dog Rescue

The Dog Channel at Rochdale Dog Rescue

TV goes to the dogs

If you're one of the six million people in the UK who owns a dog, then you might fancy spending your evenings watching a new TV channel dedicated to your little friend.

The Dog Channel is being run from a house in Oldham. It has a special dog doctor and features on everything from dog holidays to dogs who work.

Joanne Wall and Simon Norton are the couple behind the channel. They decided to set it up because of a shared love of all things canine, though Simon says the inspiration to get on-screen came from an unusual place.

Not every story is a happy one on The Dog Channel

"We were inspired by a guy who does a part-time channel on caravanning and camping. We were watching that and Joanne came up with the idea.

"So we mulled the idea over and sat there with a pen and paper, and the ideas just flew out of our minds.

"We put the word around to different dog organisations and dog forums, and the response was unbelievable. Every single person emailed back to say ‘yes, we do want a channel dedicated to dogs’. It just snowballed from there."

The channel is currently being shown on satellite television four times a week. It’s an impressive achievement, especially when you consider the fact that it is all being put together in the couple’s front bedroom, as Simon explains.

"We put the word around to different dog organisations and dog forums, and the response was unbelievable."

Simon Norton on the demand for a dog-centred channel

"All the work is done in there. All the voice pieces, all the video editing, the full lot – even the shows are put together in there."

At present, the couple are producing everything in their spare time, but they’re hoping that it could become full-time next year.

Until then though, they’re looking for dogs (and owners) with good stories to feature on the channel, so if you think your pooch has what it takes to be a TV star, you can contact the Dog Channel via their website.
