Pearlly Excellence!

The Northern Quarter’s Chinese Arts Centre is celebrating after winning the Creative Excellence Award at this year’s Pearl Awards.

The Pearl Awards

  • The Pearl Awards are a celebration of individuals and organisations of Chinese origin, for their work towards raising the profile and creating a positive image of Chinese people in Britain
  • The Creative Excellence Award recognises excellence and outstanding achievement in the visual, performing and literary arts

Speaking at the ceremony, Chinese Arts Centre CEO Sarah Champion said they were particularly proud to get the award for China Live as it "was an ambitious tour of five Live Artists from Mainland China.ÌýWe toured them to 13 UK venues including Baltic in Newcastle and the V & A in London.Ìý

"At each venue they received huge audiences and rave reviews.ÌýLive Art is the most contemporary of all art-forms and, for us, it goes the furthest to challenge the stereotypical image of Chinese arts being only brush-painting and calligraphy."

It’s of particular importance to the Centre because, as a direct result of China Live 2005, they have just secured funding for VITAL International Chinese Live Art Festival 2006, a major programme of Live Art events that will take place from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 November.

More than a simple arts festival, VITAL is to be followed by a year of residencies by Chinese artists in collaboration with institutions across England, which will culminate in a second VITAL festival in October 2007.

VITAL 06 will contain Live Art performances, film screenings, and artists' talks and presentations. Artists at the event include:

Marcus Young (USA), He Chengyao (China), Leung Po-shan Anthony (Hong Kong), Patty Chang (USA), Mad for Real (UK), Edwin Lung (UK/Hong Kong), Dai Guang Yu (China), He Yungchang (China), Lee Wen (Singapore), Yadong Hao (China/UK) Yuen Kin-leung (Hong Kong) and Lisa Cheung (UK).
