Single sex or mixed?

Single sex or mixed?

Do you want your children to go to single sex schools - or mixed? Manchester City Council is asking all parents this question to find out if there is still a demand for boys or girls only schools. Find out more:

Single sex schools in Manchester

For boys:

  • North Manchester High School for Boys
  • Burnage High School

For girls:

  • North Manchester High School for Girls
  • Whalley Range High School
  • Levenshulme High School

There are five single sex high schools in Manchester – two for boys and three for girls. Now the Council has launched a city-wide survey of parents to find out if there is still a demand for them or if they are no longer the schools of choice.

Councillor Jeff Smith, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Education said: "In some parts of the city there is a shortage of co-educational school places. At the same time there seems to be a decline in demand for single sex schooling."

"We want to know if parents and pupils still want single sex education and if so how this can best be accommodated while ensuring there are sufficient co-educational school places to meet demand."

The council is preparing to rebuild or refurbish all of its high schools through the Government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme and wants to consult parents before it goes ahead.

The council is writing to all parents of children in single sex secondary schools and all primary schools. Anyone else wishing to comment should write to:

Patsy Kane, PPP Unit, 4th Floor, Heron House, Lloyd St, Manchester M2 5LE
