Rachel I's story

My family and I arrived in Manchester only six months ago.

Rachel I

My name is Rachel I. I come from Israel, I am married and have 2 children, I have only lived in Manchester for 6 months.

We didn’t know many people and didn’t know our neighbours. But we soon made friends with the people on our street.

One month after we had moved here my family were asleep when suddenly we were woken up by a loud knocking at the front door. It was the middle of the night...who could that be?

Ìý I looked at the clock it was 2:30! We were very frightened.Ìý My husband looked out of the window and saw two people and he asked them ‘What do you want?’.

The two people outside were a man and woman who were drunk and answered him ‘We want to come in’.Ìý They kept trying to open the front door and get in.

They banged the letter box and kept trying the door handle.Ìý I was very worried that my children would wake up and start crying.Ìý My husband asked them ‘ Do you want the Police?’

‘Yes please’ they said. I was very scared to phone the Police because I had to go downstairs by the front door that they kept trying to get in to.

I ran so fast I nearly fell down. I phoned the Police and they arrived ten minutes later. But by then the man had run away and the young girl had gone too a few minutes later.

We gave the Police all this information and they went look for these people.Ìý Our neighbours came outside to speak to us as it turned out that they had had the same thing happen to them.

The Police thought they might know who the people were and suspected that they had wanted to rob us.

The next day I was still very afraid that they might come back. I slept with my children to make sure they were safe. I was really afraid to go down stairs for the rest of the day. It took several weeks before I started to feel better but now I am Ok.
