Etti's story

When I lived in the USA, we lived in a wonderful nice place called Iowa.

Etti

My name is Etti. I have lived in England for 2½ years, My husband comes from England but I come from Israel, I am a mother of 5 children.Ìý Thank God.

The one thing that wasn't wonderful was the weather.Ìý We often had thunderstorms with lightening and thunder.

After having only been in the USA for a few weeks we sat in the warm kitchen and outside we heard a sound like fighting and bombs. It was a horrible thunderstorm coming like it had a few times before.

We didn't worry about the storm only that the thunder might wake the children. Then the telephone rang and they told us that a tornado had developed from the storm and that an alarm would soon go off and we needed to run to the basement quickly.

We started to panic. First because we didn't have a basement and secondly because no one had told us about tornados and we didn't know how long we needed to be in the basement. The storm was getting stronger and was getting closer to us. We needed to drive to friends house that had a basement.

We started to prepare, my husband took our three year old to the car and then went back for our one and half year old. He was soaked when he returned as the storm was getting even stronger. I grabbed a bag and started to put inside food and clothing. I grabbed my two week old child and ran or the car. The rain was very very strong and the noise from the thunder was terrible.

We started to drive but had to stop because a large tree had fallen and blocked out path. We changed direction but again our path was blocked by a fallen tree. The rain and thunder got even louder and the wind got stronger.

One of the children was sick on me and the baby too. We finally made it to the basement of our friends house and telephone rang. The person on the other end of the phone told us that the tornado had passed and we could go back home. We started to laugh that that in the worst part of the storm we were in the car instead of the basement!
