A new textile
artwork will become a legacy to the 11,000 volunteers and the staff
who make up the XVII Commonwealth Games workforce, Crew 2002.
Made up of thousands
of scraps of fabric, each individually decorated by the members
of Crew 2002, The 8m x 3m artwork is on display in the lobby of
the Midland Hotel, Manchester until the end of August. Additional
fabric scraps have been made from scanned passport photographs of
Crew 2002 that make up the ‘faces’ of the figures.
Three Mancunian
designers selected for their skills with large textile works - Tracy
Webster, Ruth Northall and Sophie Zadeh - coordinated a volunteer
team of dedicated seamstresses to put together this artwork. Cotton
and textiles were selected as the art media, for their strong representation
of the heritage of the North West.
"Just as each
and every member of Crew 2002 has made an invaluable contribution
to the success of the Games, each individual piece of fabric makes
up this beautiful image to represent the core messages of the Games:
diversity, community, peace and inclusiveness," said Amy Parrish-Rett,
Adecco Volunteer Manager of Crew 2002. "It is both a colourful symbol
and a celebration of the diverse background of people in the North
West who have united together for a single purpose: the ‘friendly’
Games."
The art legacy
textile will be on display at the Portland Visitor Centre from the
1 September and will then tour the UK as part of an exhibition on
the Commonwealth. A permanent display will then be found.
