With less
than two weeks to go before the Games commence, the Commonwealth
Games Village, which will be home to nearly 5000 athletes and officials,
was unveiled today.
Theresa Grant,
general manager of the Village said: 鈥淭wo years of careful planning
has been invested in ensuring the Village provides the standard
of facilities which are more than adequate for some of the world鈥檚
top athletes. We have listened carefully to our consultative committee
and made every effort to accommodate as many needs and requests
as possible.鈥
The Village,
at the University of Manchester, Fallowfield, is split into two
zones (Residential and International) and will accommodate up to
4,800 athletes from 72 nations. The main dining hall is 4275m sq,
making it the largest temporary structure ever to be erected in
the UK.
Other facilities
include a bar and bistro, florist, hair salon, bank, jewellers and
engravers, travel agent, merchandise store and multi-faith religious
centre.
Sarah Bailey
MBE, paralympic swimmer said: 鈥淭he Village looks great. When all
the athletes arrive next week the place will really come alive.
Having everyone on one site means that we all have the opportunity
to meet fellow competitors, socialise, share stories and generally
give each other support.鈥
