Giggs to kick-off celebrations

Ryan Giggs

Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs will carry the Queens Jubilee Baton in Manchester in time for the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Giggs is set to carry the baton into Albert Square and will kick-off a spectacular evening of celebrations in the city centre on Wednesday 24th July.

Also due to carry the baton on the day are Ian Kelsey, star of TV's hospital drama Casualty and former England soccer international Trevor Brooking.

The Opening Ceremony takes place on Thursday 25th July and marks the commencement of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Many sporting celebrities are lined up to carry the baton on its 50 day tour of the UK. On Sunday 23rd June, Day 18, champion boxer, Barry McGuigan, known as the Clones Cyclone, carried The Queen鈥檚 Jubilee Baton in Canterbury.

Other celebrity sporting Relay Runners have included Sir Geoff Hurst, Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Denise Lewis, Sir Roger Bannister, Seb Coe and Steve Cram.
