And anyone making their way through the underpass at Wakering Road will have noticed the interactive light instillation that changes colour as people walk through the tunnel. Now "Artscape" - the project which these sculptures are a part of - celebrates it's first anniversary. The public arts project is part of the multi-million pound regeneration of the town centre. Tracy McNulty was one of the people that helped choose the sculptures. She said there were over 100 submissions from artists from across the country. She told Â鶹Éç London's Lebo Diseko how the instillation at Wakering Road, by RaphaelÌý Daden, was chosen. "It's a main connective area between the new housing development and the town centre, and an important thoroughfare [at] the key gateway into the new transport and shopping hub," she said. "As such, it merited having a strong and distinctive instillation.
"Rafael's proposal interacted with [the] pedestrian… it was about connecting the people here with what was going on the other side of the road." The Council’s Chief Executive Rob Whiteman said the installations reflected the multi-cultural make-up of the borough. He added: "The vision, ambition and innovation which these works represent mirror perfectly the kind of social environment we are aiming to achieve through the regeneration of Barking Town Centre. As such these installations are a pivotal element of our goal of making our shared space more attractive." last updated: 28/12/2007 at 14:28 You are in: London > London Local > Barking and Dagenham > Community Life > Barking Artscape: One year on
