On an average weekend, more people visit historic buildings and monuments than go to football matches.
This month Legacies brings you a selection of over 60 stories about our most fascinating man-made structures from around the UK. Choose a location from the map or the drop-down menu on this page to find a story.
Each story will be of interest to anyone, whether they are from that part of the country or not. And there's a few surprises in store for those of you who think that heritage stops with castles and country estates. For example, why is there an Italian chapel on the north Atlantic Orkney Islands? Did you know that a large part of Nottingham, and its history, lies under the ground? What kind of a mind would conceive of the surreal architectural fantasy at Portmeirion in Wales? And what legacy of bricks and mortar did the Moravians leave in Northern Ireland?
Local history isn't just for local people, and in every corner of the UK there are fascinating tales to be told. We'll let the buildings do the rest of the talking
If you would like to share a story about any of buildings that are important to you, please visit the Interact section.
