Aap Kaa Surroor (2007)
12aContains moderate violence and threat.

Few composers or playback singers have made a successful transition to the Bollywood screen, but that hasn't deterred Himesh Reshammiya from playing the hero in Aap Kaa Surroor. India's most sought after vocalist/musician leaps from recording studio to foreign locations in his acting debut in which he plays (wait for it) HR, a famous Indian singer who's implicated in the murder of a TV journalist. Lacking originality and suspense, this dud is a blatant ego massage for Mr Reshammiya, who claims the love story-cum-thriller is inspired by his real life.

The snow-capped mountains of Germany are the formulaic backdrop for romance and action when events planner, Riaa (Hansika Motwani), locks eyes with her famous client, HR (Reshammiya). But before the star struck lovers can pledge undying love, the superstar is arrested for the suspicious death of a German showbiz reporter who was last seen interviewing him. With the help of his loyal business partner (Shravan), sexy lawyer (Mallika Sherawat) and dodgy concert promoter (Darshan Jariwala), HR sets about clearing his name. But not until he's had full opportunity to showcase half a dozen new musical numbers and an impressive assortment of signature baseball caps.

"STRICTLY FOR HARDCORE HIMMESH FANS"

Dubious dialogues and weak characterisation only work to punctuate the paper-thin plot of Aap Kaa Surroor. And it's all down to writer/director Prashant Chadha's unimaginative screenplay, which hinges on Reshammiya playing himself and trying to convince the world there's more to him than money and fame. The typical 'boy meets girl and family objects' storyline with a murder mystery thrown in is also far from convincing. Neither are Reshammiya or Motwani, who are more wooden than a pair of deck chairs, and ill suited as leads. This is strictly one for hardcore Himmesh fans who want to satisfy their curiosity.

In Hindi with English subtitles.

Aap Kaa Surroor is out in the UK on 29th June 2007.
