Help! I'm A Fish (Hjælp, jeg er en fisk) (2001)
U

"Help! I'm A Fish" earned more money than "Chicken Run" in parts of Europe, but it seems unlikely British children will take it to their hearts. Despite some impressive animation and a neatly villainous turn from Alan Rickman, it's a bizarre and faintly nightmarish cartoon that lacks the charm and innocence of the Disney classics it cravenly emulates.

Three children on an angling trip accidentally stumble upon a secret laboratory where the mad Professor MacKrill (voiced by Monty Python 's Terry Jones) has invented a potion which transforms human beings into fish. When one of the kids drinks the elixir and becomes a starfish, the other two must become fish themselves to rescue her from the brine.

But their efforts are hampered by Joe (Rickman), a venal vertebrate who gains the power to speak, and scheme, once he slurps the antidote they need to regain their human shape. If they don't get it back within 48 hours, the trio are doomed to remain forever in the evil empire Joe plans to build with his army of mutant crabs.

Battles with sharks, octopi, and other denizens of the deep may prove diverting to young audiences, though they will be left unmoved by the film's heavy-handed messages about global warming and being kind to animals.

Accompanying adults, meanwhile, may scoff at how the all-American, baseball-cap-wearing teen hero always has a solution for every scrape, and the way that - even when turned into a jellyfish - the fat kid is the butt of all the jokes.
