Fellini 8½ DVD (1962)

"Fellini 8½" is a film so woven into the fabric of the cinematic medium that it demands to be seen on the big screen. It is also Fellini's most personal work and studied in the home, it reveals further intimate layers. The new DVD release offers a great opportunity to enjoy the film in pin-sharp quality.

The picture transfer is digitally remastered from a restored print. Gianni di Venanzo's evocative black and white photography is icy clear on disc, and a pleasure to watch.

Nino Rota's memorable score is sadly not enhanced, with a clear 2.0 mono mix the only choice on offer here.

Extras include a small photo gallery and Fellini's filmography. Whether more behind-the-scenes material would be useful is debatable. It's hard to imagine anything adding to this ultimate work of self-referential indulgence, though it is worth adding to your collection.
