Flamenco (2000)

It is rare to come across a director's vision that is strong and pure in equal measure. Even if a vision that is strong manages to make it to the screen, it will probably have been sullied by the messy compromises of film-making. Spanish director Carlos Saura is an exception, an outstanding talent who generally realises his intentions, meaning that every single frame has a purpose and that he has remained in control throughout.

His films are always alive with passion, and this massive plus is aided by the fact that his other creative turn on (aside from cinema) is the art of dance. Anyone who has seen "Blood Wedding", "Carmen", or "Tango" will know what I mean.

"Flamenco", which was actually made before "Tango", is Saura's latest recreation of dance on screen. It is a celebration of pure performance, and the sensual rhythms, entwining bodies, heel-clicking and mesmerising guitar all come together gloriously through Saura's fastidious technical skills (his dramatic use of lighting is particularly striking), none of which squeeze the huge sense of life off the screen. For those who enjoy taking a bath in pure pleasure.
