Pop music is a collaborative art form, one that often relies on networks of creative friends getting together to work out the solutions to musical puzzles and show their workings-out to the world. That’s how Ella Eyre—born Ella McMahon in West London in 1994—has flown outwards from her BRIT school beginnings to taking the runner-up position in both the Â鶹Éç’s Sound of 2014 and the BRIT Critics’ Choice award, and being the winner of both the MOBO best newcomer award and the 2014 BRIT Award for single of the year.
It began with her appearance on Bastille’s 2012 mixtape Other People’s Heartache Pt.2, singing TLC’s No Scrubs over the XX’s Angels. This lead to a trip to Rudimental’s studio to work on a song called Waiting All Night (a No.1 single, and BRIT-winner), and then to further collaborations with Naughty Boy (Think About It, with Wiz Khalifa), Tinie Tempah (Someday (Place in the Sun)) and DJ Fresh (Gravity, a No.4 hit). Not to mention her co-written hit singles If I Go and Comeback, both taken from her debut album Feline.
Oh, and she co-wrote Black Smoke, the German entry in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. See? Teamwork!
