Flights of imagination

From the mid-1950s until his death in 1993, the controversial jazz composer, bandleader, piano player, poet and philosopher Sun Ra led The Arkestra – an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible line-up.

Sun Ra believed his music transcended “earthbound limitations by riding the flights of imagination” and his message is that “all of us are free to ride those flights with him if we have the precision and discipline to do so”.

Now under the direction of American avante-garde alto saxophone player Marshall Allen, The Arkestra continue to play eclectic, outrageous and mystifying cosmic jazz to enthusiastic sold-out crowds.
