About the concert

Continuing its series of works commissioned by its Chief Conductor, Thomas Dausgaard, the Â鶹Éç SSO premieres two new works inspired by Scotland and Scottish culture: William Sweeney takes the pibroch, a traditional musical form associated with the bagpipes, and adapts it for the Â鶹Éç SSO’s Principal Clarinet, Yann Ghiro; while the Beltane Fire Festival’s spectacular displays and reinterpretation of ancient Celtic rituals are the starting point for Anna Clyne. These premieres are complemented by John McLeod’s thrilling tone poem about a famous preserved Viking ship, and by the Scottish Premiere of Glasgow-born Oliver Knussen’s Third Symphony - barely 15 minutes long, but acclaimed by 'The Guardian' as one of the 50 greatest ever written.

The works featured in this concert will be recorded for broadcast in Â鶹Éç Radio 3's 'Hear and Now' on Saturday 10 February 2018.

Tickets available from Monday 30 October 2017.

Please note: the previously advertised performance of a Â鶹Éç Commission from composer David Fennessy has been postponed until season 2018/2019.
