Maltese-born Joseph Calleja is one of today’s finest lyric tenors. At 19, he made his operatic debut as Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth at the Astra Theatre in Malta, before going on to win an award in the Hans Gabor Belvedere competition, an event that launched his international career.
At only 35 years of age, Joseph has sung 28 principal roles and in 2012 he was voted Gramophone magazine’s Artist of the Year; he also made a notable appearance at the Last Night of Proms. This year marked Joseph’s Hollywood debut, starring as legendary tenor Enrico Caruso in The Immigrant alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard.
A Grammy-nominated recording artist for Decca Classics, Calleja releases his fifth solo album for the label, Amore, later this year.
