Londoner Ellie Rose wants to be the promise you can’t break and the only rose in your garden. She wants to be the ice in your whisky, melting as she meets your mouth. And that’s just according to Off the Record, an ultra-catchy, snappy and cheeky pop song that Rose uploaded to 鶹 Introducing at the beginning of the year along with more the Kate Nash-like Nature of the Beast.
Rose, who has African, Indian and Welsh roots, was encouraged to start writing songs by Reg Presley of The Troggs, who she played Wild Thing (his song) to when she was just 11. Now 19, her music tackles what’s on the mind of a typical teenage girl in London, and that means - by her own admission - simple concerns like “leopard print tights, speed bumps and boy bands”, but also important issues, like the campaign against FGM, which she addressed in 21st Century Girl and played live at the 2014 Girl Summit. The pop press has already been seduced by her effortless talent and charm. Post-Glastonbury, expect Rose to become known to a far-wider audience.
