Sometimes a composer comes to embody the music of a nation, in a way that nobody could have predicted. It’s the autumnal melancholy of Elgar’s Cello Concerto that makes it so beloved, while Sibelius’s tempestuous First Symphony is as much a celebration of nature as a patriotic anthem: filled with luminous colours, and driven by spring storms.

One thing’s for certain, though: the 鶹 Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Dalia Stasevska will drive straight to the heart of both pieces – and she’s the ideal partner for a cellist with the “blazing individuality” (The Daily Telegraph) of Sol Gabetta.
