Hi all, I'm trying to find a service record for Robert Duff, born 1895 in Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy area. I am presuming he saw service during WW1 with the Black Watch.
I am also trying to find a record for James Elder, private AO1687, 93rd Foot Regt (Argyll and Sutherland Regiment) I know he was serving in this regiment in 1876.
Any help appreciated
I cant help with service records but this is from the Oficial website
The 93rd had still ten years of Indian soldiering before they at last got back, in 1870, to their native Scotland. There they happily stayed until 1879, when they were sent for two years to Gibraltar; and then, in 1881, were amalgamated with the 91st - a very successful union. But the old 93rd, as Sir Colin knew them, ceased to exist.
Edna
I can't find a record for either of these men that matches your information exactly.
There are several James Elders including some of about the right age but no record for one in the 93rd Foot. There was one who was promoted to Sergeant in the 71st on 1.4.1876. He was born in Ellon in Aberdeenshire. If he was definitely in the 93rd then it may be that his records didn't survive. Do you know when (or if ) he was discharged?
There are lots of Robert Duffs in the WW1 records but I can't see one in the Black Watch. However Robert A Duff said on his attestation form for the 1st Scottish Horse in1914 that he had served for 5 years in the Black Watch. He was 23 at the time and from Perthshire.
There's also one born slightly later in the Argylls, born in Larbert in Stirlingshire
Of course not everyone joined the forces for various reasons.
Hope that's some help. You can look at the WW1 records at your local library on Ancestry.

I know from the marriage cert that James Elder was serving as a private in 1876, looks like his number was AO1687, he was aged 21. On my Grans birth certificate in 1889 his occupation is jute weaver, so his service was sometime between those 2 dates. I haven't found out his birthplace yet.
Robert Duff was born in 1895, and stayed in Monifieth when he was 18. It's only stories within the family that link him to the Black Watch, I've no real proof that was his regiment.
Thanks for your input.

Hmm. . . right age, right nationality - any idea if he had a previous regiment, or if he was born in Dundee?
