Percy was born in 1896 to Clara Simpkin in Knaresborough. In the 1901 census he was a nurse child living with the Blades family. He was later known as John Simpkin does anyone have any details of this person or Clara Simpkin nee Benson? i would be grateful of any info at all.
There is a Clara Simpkin age 33 on the 1901 census living at Beech House, High Street Knaresborough with William Forbes and his wife and sister in law. Forbes is a medical practitioner and Clara is a domestic general assistant having been born in Knaresborough. RG13/4050 Folio 13 Pg 18. There is another Clara, a wife of a cutler, living in Sheffield. I would not have thought the social position of such a woman would have dictated a son being farmed out as a nurse child, particularly as this Clara also had another child and is 46 years old.
One thought that occurs to me. How do you know that Clara's maiden name is Benson?
We know a John Simpkin married a Clara Benson in 1892. on the 1891 census Clara benson was single and then on the 1901 census she was a widow. Percy simpkin who then called himself John has not got a fathers name on his birth certificate, but on his wedding certificate his father is down as Charles Simpkin. Were John and Charles related? This is the problem I am trying to solve. I am also checking the possibility Clara was actually a Simpkin as this is her only surname on Percys birth cert.

If there is no father's name on the birth certificate then the probability is that he was illegitimate.
Never trust names of fathers on marriage certificates if there is no name on the birth certificate. I have discovered this myself at a cost of many years of fruitless searching.
My hunch would be that Clara was a Simpkin at birth and that she had an illegitimate child.
Thanks for the reply this was my next line of research. I thought it was a bit strange she only had the one surname on the birth certificate.
