    Hi everyone,
Whenever I open my Dalek composting bin to empty the contents of my composting bucket, loads of tiny, tiny white flies emerge, and fly all around the area, being an annoyance, and too close to my Greenhouse, for my liking. Anyone know what they may be, and whether they are a threat to my Greenhouse crops. Although I have raised beds nearby, they are all covered with Enviromesh, which has a minute mesh. I have no idea how they get in the bin. Thanks

    Hello Bob,
The tiny white flies seem to be just that !
White flies lay eggs in the soil and are transported on the roots of plants and veg if you put them into your Dalek
I keep an aerosol bug spray by my Compost bin and give it a spray whe I open the lid,it`s not a complete cure but it does bump of plenty!

    Hi Sproutinbrocoli,
Many thanks for your advice, I have used an insect spray on many of those that escaped, was a bit concerned about spraying the compost heap itself.

Hi, These will be springtails that are feeding on decaying plant material and creating the compost from organic matter. They're all part of the process of producing the compost. It's definitely worth reading up on what are the good bugs and what are bad.. This webpage shows quite a few

    Hello,
Thankyou very much for your advice, I had no idea they were part of the composting process. I will leave them alone, and put the insect spray away. Thanks also for the good/bad bugs link, I will add it to my favorites folder.
