just wondered if anyone can give us some advise as to what we are doing wrong with our conifers? Autumn 2010 we bought 3 lovely different types of conifers to put around our pond (which has a raised wall). They were all about 1 metre tall and looked perfectly healthy. Two of them we put into large pots with good compost and the third one we put directly into a bed close to the waterfall, again in very good compost. One of the conifers in a pot died fairly quickly, but the other two still looked good and grew. Unfortunately they are now both showing signs that they are going to die!! We just don't know why as we've previously planted other types around the garden and they are all doing very well.
Can anyone help?
Many thanks,
Colin and Glynis
Have you kept them watered throughout the dry winter we had?
Probably not as much as we should which might account for the ones in the pots but I wouldn't have thought that the one in the ground would have been affected by not watering enough as it was pretty well established

Is there any chance that a dog, fox or cat is using them to mark its territory?
We don't own a dog and our garden is pretty well fox proof although we do get cats come in on occassions. We do our best to deter them as we love the birds and have several nesting in our garden at the moment.
I thought that conifers were so hardy and virtually impossible to kill so I've no idea what we are doing wrong!!
We are loath to buy more to screen the pond if they are going to die, so would like to replace them with other evergreen trees. Anyone got any suggestions please?
Many thanks for responding.
Kind Regards,
Glynis

Conifers are cold hardy, but they do suffer from drought and some insect pests.
