Hello.. My lawn has been treated with moss remover, followed by raking to remove considerable and long-standing moss, but this has left parts of the lawn "brown" and sparce of grass.
Can anyone advise the best way to sow new grass seed? (does it have to be raked?)

You might like to try the playing fields solution, which is to spike the ground then sow, covering very lightly with compost.

You may be at a seasonal disadvantage as this sort of work is best done late in the year when the ground remains moist and the birds are less hungry. Although the lawn looks bare there may be viable grass plants still there, so my suggeston would be to apply a weak solution of liquid feed to stimulate these into growth. Also grass plants should 'tiller' that means form new plants around themselvs from the roots. So some TLC may win the day without extra expense.

Depends on the size of your lawn and size of bare patches. Small lawns are easier to maintain and bare patches usually small and manageable.

I've only a small lawn which just resently has had a weed and feed. True to form there are some grey patches left after a good rake and last weekend had to pick out some dandilions which had started to grow in other parts of the lawn. I was going to weed and feed again in May.

The grass areas are looking very green and growing strong but I'll leave a cut until the weekend and airate the ground using a fork afterwards this also allows water to penitrate the ground if you get rain and makes it softer to work with.

The soil under lawns can become very compact due to people walking on it, I'd advise you use a fork to put air back into the bare patches and if large areas rake the surface, this makes it easier for new seeds to grow in . Give the whole lawn a weed and feed again in May before even considering sowing new grass seed on the bare patches.

I haven't sown grass seed in bare patches before so can't advise how to do that part but what I would say is your lawn may look like work in progress this year but will be lush next year. My grass has always grown into the grey patches as they have been quite small.

    Hope this has been helpful.
