Couldn't resist the pack of 5 Jerusalem Artichoke corms at the garden centre for 50p, but having read that they can be a garden pest and are rather flatulence inducing, have I made a bad mistake? Your thoughts please.
Yes they are known as f***ychokes.
Five plants will be more than enough for a family. They are very productive. Leave them in the ground over Winter. Make sure you remove every last bit or a plant will grow from every bit you leave behind.
IMO they are a plant you grow for several years then don't grow for a few years, then come back to again.
Plant 5" deep, 15" apart at the back of a border (6-8ft tall).
Earth up when they're a foot tall to help stability.
Harvest when the leaves start to turn yellow.
You can leave them in the ground until you're ready for them, in which case cut back leaving a foot to act as a marker.
Should get 2-3kg yield per plant.
Any volunteers will grow again next year (as per potatoes)
Taste is subjective, only one way to find out.
Many thanks BaraGwenith & cufcskim for your kind information, I'll just have to give them a go
