Cordon pear tree struggling

  Hi
  
  I planted a cordon concorde pear on quince c rootstock about 3 years ago
  
  I have had no fruit and only a couple of blossoms in all this time
  
  last year and now again this year i have noticed 3 of teh branches do nothing at all
  
  - they are alive and green under the bark, but no leaves, no buds at all, again, the same 3 as last year
  
  any idea what is wrong with my tree and expecially why thse 3 particular branches do nothing

  Hi rosalba,
  
  It's difficult to say what the problem is from your description . Most current year fruiting problems arise from problems the previous year, whether that be stress from disease or lack of water/nutrients when the fruiting buds for the next year where forming.
  Is it growing in a pot? If so it could be a lack of water last summer at a crucial point when these fruiting buds should have been forming. The same principle applies for ground planted trees as we've had such low levels of rainfall (he types that when we've had nothing but rain here for hours/days)
  
  You say the pear is grown as a cordon, if that is the case then it shouldn't have branches as such but fruiting spurs. Pruning may also be an issue.
  
  To promote fruit buds to form I would embark on a summer pruning and feeding plan this year to help improve your chances of getting your pear to flower more freely next year.
  Summer pruning is fairly straight forward and there are plenty of advice pages to browse through at your leisure. As for feeding, I would give your tree a high potash feed this summer, maybe even a few to give it a real boost.
  As for the 3 "branches", wait and see what happens they may start to grow with a bit of feeding. If not then pruning (next winter) should stimulate them into growth.

  I agree about the pruning - but this year that shouldnt be the issue as I summer pruned it correctly last year and then winter pruned correctly this winter, which I thoght would sort it but no, those same 3 branches have no sign of green, no leaves or anything but when you scrape the bark they are a healthy green
  
  Im wondering iof the roots havent taken off correctly - do specific branches correspond to specific roots i wonder?
  
  I had a liitle look around the roots and I noticed that on one side the roots are quite alot higher then the other and on this side the roots are almost peeking out of the soil! I wonder if I should replant deeper, although im worried the disturbance may finish it off?!!
